Cards Hang Tough, Fall to Pirates

circ B

The middle school football team made the long journey to Sullivan Thursday night to take on the Black River Pirates. It was a long trip, and the team did not perform well early, falling behind at the half by a score of 20-6. But with some motivational words from Coach Aliff, and a few key adjustments by Coach Baughman, the Cards battled back in the second half. They got a touchdown from Kenny Grobolsek, his second on the night and one of four that he would score in the game, and a big stop from a fired up defense. Big tackles came from Kane Besserer and Gavin Schuster setting up the Cards for another Grobolsek romp into the endzone. The extra point try was no good, leaving the score at 20-18. The Pirates put up a touchdown, their only points of the second half, to extend the lead back to 10 at 28-18 as the fourth quarter commenced. It appeared the home team was on its way to another score to put the game away, when cornerback John Michael Donaldson stepped in front of a Pirate pass for a big interception. Grobolsek scored again to make the score 28-24, but time ran out on the Cards after a hard fought battle. With the loss Brookside falls to 3-3 on the season, with their final home game of the year coming up on Thursday October 5th against Wellington.
