The middle school football squad won their second game in a row as they played dominant defense to shut out a scrappy Wellington squad by a final of 8-0. The game was a battle from start to finish, as the Cardinal offense struggled to move the ball consistently against a stout Duke defense. It wasn’t until the last drive of the first half that the Cards finally broke free, with strong runs from 8th grader Shawn Moore and Xavier Brown, mixed in with a pass completion from QB Alex Toth to Brown. Brown found the endzone on the last play of the half on a reverse, and 8th grader Ben Montgomery followed it up with the 2 point conversion.
The story of this game, however, was the Cardinal defense. On the first Drive of the game Montgomery intercepted the downfield Duke pass, and Toth followed it up with a pick of his own later in the half. Montgomery would later recover a fumble as the Cards forced three turnovers on the night. 8th graders Trey Reeves, Lincoln Barnhart and Brennen Gainer all had passes defended, while each of the following had tackles for loss on the night:
McLaughlin (8th grader)
Kitzberger (7th grader)
The Cards will look to continue their winning ways next week, as they host Firelands on Thursday September 19th at 5 p.m.
