Girls Varsity Basketball · Lady Cards Dominate on Senior Night!

The girls basketball team has improved dramatically over the course of this season, even when the scoreboard didn’t necessarily show it, but on senior night the Cards were flying high. Before the game started Brookside honored our two outstanding seniors, Jelene Williams and Emma Gillespie, and then proceeded to honor them even further by completing their best first half of the season. The Cardinals jumped ahead early, as Sarah Torres consistently found her way into the paint on the drive, scoring 8 of her 13 points on the night and the ladies lead 15-2 after one stanza. That in itself was a great indicator of how things were going to go, as the team has sometimes struggled to get scoring at the outset of games at times this year. But it was really an outstanding defensive effort that pushed the team well out into the lead, as Torres, Williams, and Heaven Vanzant forced the Phoenix into numerous turnovers on their way to a 32-10 halftime score. The great defense continued into the third quarter, with Adrianna Mihalak joining in the pressure defensive effort, and the 4 post players (Gillespie, Savanah Walls, Madison Adams and Ashlee-Ann Aliff) controlling the boards and outletting the ball to start the fast break. Walls tallied 6 of her 12 in the third, and Gillespie had 8 of her 12 as the lead swelled to 48-18. The fourth quarter saw a lot of new and different lineups centered around the 2 seniors, with Williams knocking in 6 of her game high 15 as the Cards cruised home to a 58-34 victory. Scoring on the night went as follows:

Sarah Torres 5-0-13

Madison Adams 2-0-4

Jelene Williams 6-3-15

Shyanne Shinsky 1-0-2

Savanah Walls 6-0-12

Emma Gillespie 5-2-12

It was the 6th win of the season for Brookside, who will take the weekend off from game action before finishing the regular season with road games Monday (John Marshall) and Wednesday (Wellington). The Cardinals will host Wickliffe in the first round of the Division III District Tournament at BHS on Wednesday February 19th, with tipoff set for 7pm. That game will be the first time Brookside basketball (boys or girls) in the new building.
